How to Wear Neutrals For Any Occasion

post pic

Neutral-toned outfits can seem…well, boring.

But that doesn’t mean that they have to be!

In this post, I’ll show you how to wear neutrals in a chic and sophisticated way without looking dowdy or uninspired. It can be tough to figure out how to go seamlessly from dressy to business to casual, but with neutral pieces, the transition is not only easy – it’s foolproof!

Let’s take a look at some fun ways to wear staple colors for events ranging from a night out to the office or a coffee house meet-up!

For these two outfits, I chose easy pieces in neutral colors like black, nude, taupe, and teal that layer well. I could have easily worn the black pants from my left outfit underneath the teal shirt dress in outfit two, which makes these pieces ideal for traveling since they can be worn in a variety of ways. The sheen in the taupe shift dress takes the look up a notch and with my Cromia nude patent bag, I’m ready to head out for dinner! Likewise, this teal oversized shirt dress is easy and elegant – two things I look for in neutral pieces since I don’t have any time to waste when I’m done putting my daughter to bed for the night and want to throw something chic on for a night out. My favorite touch is the pockets on the shirt dress!

Business outfits don’t have to be dowdy! Whether you’re doing a tailored monochromatic look like my outfit on the left or a relaxed, chic look like the one on the right, you can’t go wrong with pieces in warm and cool neutrals. Like I mention in my post “La Mode Française” or How to Look European Chic, fit is perhaps the most important part of any ensemble. What I love about these looks is that they’re perfectly tailored and elegant without appearing too “done-up.” I just pair staple pieces like my J Brand black jeans or a pair of cream cullotes with statement pieces in complimenting colors. Putting one fitted piece with a more relaxed one also helps you achieve the perfect effortless look and finding statement pieces like a standout pair of heels or embellished shirt pull any outfit together and add visual interest without going overboard!

Casual looks are so much fun! I love mixing edgy details with basic, staple pieces to create a cool look that walks the line between finished and relaxed. For my left look, I bought this black washed Urban Outfitters tee in a size larger than I’d normally wear to create that “just woke up” kind of look. Paired with some distressed jeans, simple heeled black sandals, and a leather cuff bracelet, you’ve got the perfect casual look with just the right touch of edge! For my look on the right, I channeled my inner Swede and opted for a slouchy knit taupe sweater with some relaxed grey jeans and a pair of warm brown heeled sandals. I’ve worn both of these outfits out and about with the munchkin and felt put together without trying too hard!

Thanks, Mirjam! It’s just too easy to throw together looks if all the pieces are in neutral colors and quality fabrics. I’m completely streamlining my closet to be more minimalist so neutrals are staples for mixing and matching. Ooooo me too! LOVE Zara knit sweaters and the one in my pic is really versatile since it’s a thinner knit. Loving your summer minimalist looks on the blog! Can’t wait to see what you’ll put together next 🙂
