The Best Drugstore Makeup For a Flawless Face

Welcome back!

I hope you had an awesome weekend and that your Monday wasn’t too traumatizing. 🙂

I wanted to share a few of my fave drugstore makeup items that I find myself repurchasing over and over again. Thankfully none of them have had the “d” word happen to them (*discontinued*)! I know sometimes it can seem like your makeup graveyard is getting out of control – especially when you’re oily-skinned like me – and it feels like a losing battle trying to find products that are actually reliable and give you that “finished” look.

On top of that, who wants to spend an arm and a leg to look airbrushed? Not this girl! I mean, not all of us have Kim K.’s – or is it W.? – budget to play with when we want to try a new look. I know that as a lowly, impoverished grad student I certainly don’t.

So the next time you’re at your favorite drugstore, pick these items up if you’d like to achieve the natural makeup look I have in the photo above!

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with eyeliner. It’s either too thick or not thick enough. It bleeds into my eyes or stays on for days no matter how hard I try to rub it off. If it is the perfect consistency, then it’s in one of those pot things and I need yet another makeup brush to fish out of my bag in the mornings.  I’m extremely picky about the type of line I want for my liner as well since I draw on a cat eye every morning, so the liner has to be super user-friendly and foolproof. That being said, I love L’Oreal Lineur Intense in Carbon Black. I’ve used it for around seven years now, so I can honestly saw that’s worked perfectly for me in a pinch and during the times when I’ve wanted to create a more elaborate look for a night out!

I’ve searched high and low for a lipstick line that wears well throughout the day and even looks good when it starts fading. More importantly, since I love trying new colors each season, I need a line that has tons of color options and is affordable so I’m not breaking the bank to try out new makeup fads. L’Oreal’s Colour Riche line is that perfect lipstick line. It’s moisturizing, the color is buildable, there are tons of color and finish options, and they’re always coming out with special colors to follow seasonal looks. My favorite colors are Caramel Latte, Nature’s Blush, Volcanic, and Ginger Spice (as seen in my Perfect & Professional Red Lip post).

Finding the perfect mascara used to be the bane of my existence – especially a waterproof one. I used to use the Cover Girl Lash Blast line but over time found the brush to be too clunky and difficult to use without getting mascara all over my eyelids. Enter L’Oreal’s Voluminous Millon Lashes Waterproof mascara in Blackest Black. This stuff is awesome because it’s buildable without clumping, it stays on all day without running, – even in Houston heat – and removes easily with Neutrogena’s gentle makeup remover wipes. After a long, grueling day with the kiddo, the only touch-up I need is a quite swipe over the tips of my eyelashes!

Ok – I have horrible dark circles. And redness around my nose, discoloration around my chin, and some dark spots where a few mean pimples decided to leave their mark. I’ve tried all the top-of-the-line concealers out there. You name it – Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, MAC, Makeup Forever – if they have a well-known concealer, I’ve given it a go.  That being said, no matter what product I try, I find myself coming back to the Maybelline Dream Lumi Concealer line. I’ve tried this product in both Fair and Radiant and they’re both incredible. It provides smooth, pigmented, even coverage that actually lasts. And, here comes the shocker – it actually does what it claims and gives the perfect “radiant” look to your skin. Love, love, love.

As someone with oily skin, I used to be so incredibly frustrated at the Houston humidity-induced makeup meltdown that would happen about 3-4 hours after walking out the door in the morning. It didn’t seem to matter how much time I spent powdering and priming my skin for the day, the look I’d worked so hard to create at the beginning of the day was a muddy mess by 2pm. Thankfully, the NYX line has all but solved the problem of makeup meltdown for us girls with difficult skin in the form of their Matte Finish Setting Spray. After finishing my makeup, I simply hold the bottle at arm’s length and spray until my entire face has been spritzed with this glorious stuff. After drying, I take a piece of tissue and lightly dab my entire face and viola! – perfection.

Give these products a try and let me know what you think! They’re so affordable and easy to find that there’s really no reason to not make a stop at your nearest Walgreens or CVS to pick up these items when you’re out running your weekly errands!

I’ll be posting another style post this week on how to create the perfect cat eye – yay! – so be on the lookout!

I too use the Maybelline concealer and absolutely LOVE it! I decided to try it one day and haven’t looked back since! I’m definitely going to try out some of these other products as well. Thanks for the tips!

Hey, girl! It’s awesome, right? I’ve tried tons of expensive concealers and I keep coming back to the Maybelline one! Yeah, see if you like the others and let me know if you need any other suggestions. I know you have more normal skin than my oil slick skin, so I know some different products that might work better for you! 😀

    Hello Amanda,
Congretulations for your blog! Il est super et en plus cela me permet de pratiquer mon anglais. 😉
I shall test Maybelline Dream Lumi Concealer.
I know a good product for dark circles:” Pigmenclar eyes” La Roche-Posey. It changed the look of a friend who had the same problems. I do not know if we find this brand in the American pharmacy or drugstore. But if you find it demand a sample to test it.
In the pleasure to read to you ( and sorry for the faults which I make in English).

Merci, ma copine! Je suis super contente que tu peut pratiquer un peu! I also try to find French bloggers so that I can practice writing my French! Thank you so much for the product tip! I’ve been wanting to try La Roche-Posey cosmetics since I’ve only tried their skincare lines. I’ll definitely check out this product – my under eye circles are so bad that I need all the help a can get! Lol your English writing skills are much better than my French writing, I’m sure! Merci bcp pour ton commentaire! 😀

I typically don’t wear makeup at all (just way too lazy and can’t figure anything out), but I’ve heard amazing things about the Maybelline concealer, I think I’ll give it a go. The thing about having monolids is there aren’t too many YouTube videos or products geared towards you, and having eyeliner show is a question of either drawing it on panda/raccoon style, or somehow getting a double lid, which feels a little deceptive to me.

Hi Angelina! Well, you look gorgeous without any makeup! Yeah, even if you’re just wanting to cover up a few spots or some dark circles that concealer is awesome! And if you don’t have oily skin, then it shouldn’t move on you throughout the day. I know, there really aren’t enough makeup tutorials out for monolids. Although I think Michelle Phan has some awesome videos on YouTube for almond-shaped and hooded eyes. 😀 Thanks so much for stopping by!
