Monochromatic May

Welcome Back!

May has been a fairly busy month for me. Between passing my preliminary exams, running around with a nine-month-old, and celebrating four years of marriage to an awesome partner-in-crime, I’ve tried to make my outfits as effortless as possible. I wanted to share a few of the outfits I’m really digging within a monochromatic black/white color palette. For your convenience, I’ve included clickable links for each piece, with links to similar items if the ones I own are no longer in stock.

So, let’s take a look…

To simplify my morning routine, I’ve found myself reaching for monochromatic pieces that can be paired any which way. For this casual look, I put a fresh, white H&M sweater with my staple J Brand Mid-Rise Super Skinny Jeans and threw on my favorite pair of summer stiletto sandals from Nine West. Zara also has a gorgeous heeled sandal in their new summer collection if you’d prefer some extra height: Zara metallic heeled sandal. Finally, I grabbed my sleek and multi-functional Antonio Melani bag. My freshly shaved asymmetrical pixie completes the look by adding a bit of edge to the mix (haircut by Melvie at Cosa Bella Salon).

I’ve been loving off-the-shoulder looks this summer and I finally found this casual yet sophisticated bardot shirt from Zara. It comes in a variety of colors – mainly white, black, and stripes – and I ordered a size up since the small was fairly form-fitting. While I typically don’t pair two pieces that sit close to the skin, I was really feeling this look with the pop of teal I have in my Zara strappy suede sandals. Although I bought my bag in Paris a few years ago, there are tons of gorgeous options online, such as the Milly ‘Riley’ leather backpack & Rebecca Minkoff ‘Julian’ backpack. If your budget is tight, try this Pebble Zip-Front Backpack  from Forever 21. What I love most about leather backpacks is how versatile and unique they are with almost every type of outfit.

For my third look, I wanted to do something dressy with eye-catching tailoring to really demonstrate what I mean by “dressing like the French” (link to full post: “When In Doubt, Dress Like the French”). For this look, I’ve focused on keeping the makeup clean with my go-to lipstick – L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick in ‘Carmel Latte’ – but there is definitely room for a red lip like L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick in ‘Ginger Spice’Revlon Matte Lipstick in ‘Really Red’, or Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in ‘Raisin Rage’.

The top is a simple, semi-sheer high-quality knit tee that pairs nicely with the asymmetrical white midi skirt. Every woman should have a pair of nude heels like these Charles David Parker leather pumps and an equally versatile nude clutch like this ASOS Nude Square Clutch Bag. Take the guesswork out of date night and buy these two items asap.

I tend to keep accessories minimal, but I’ve been loving asymmetrical looks so much this season that I’ve started wearing one small stud in one ear and a threader earrings in the other. I love how understated this jewelry look is with monochromatic ensembles.

Love your look with white sweater, very chic and versatile at the same time!)))
Black leather backpack is my dream, I guess until I find one they will get outdated)))))) The one by Rebecca Minkoff is a nice one, but on the picture it looks nicer (and bigger) than in reality,in my point of view..Yours is very good, reminds more of a bag than a backpack, so it’s perfect! So I will keep searching:))))

Thanks so much for your comment, Anastasia! I agree about the Minkoff backpack! I liked the sleek look but tend to prefer a more compact look like the smaller bag/backpack I have here. It’s tough finding a good one online! In Paris they have leather shops all over the place where you can find pieces like that. I’m sure you’ve picked up lots of amazing accessories during your world travels! Going to Moscow has been my dream since I was a little girl. I just need to get my Visa and go already! 😀

Nice article. I really like your black, triangular purse, very cool. The links to your wardrobe are a great idea. The ad links are more accessible now, but if you can put more on the side (like the Zulilly one), they would be more “clickable”. Who is taking the pictures of you? Ruben? They look nice.

Thanks! 🙂 Yeah, I thought it’d be more user-friendly to include links since I shop at affordable spots. I think I might include more ad links; it’s just a fine line since I don’t want ads to overwhelm the content. I am sticking with image-based ads rather than text-based, though, so that should be more appealing. Yup, Ruben’s taking the photos. I’m wanting the DSLR camera so that I can get a more professional quality image and avoid awkward angles required to include my entire outfit. I also need to adjust the shutter to correct those annoying shadows that always want to show up on my face! 😛
