Why Can’t a Smart Woman Love Fashion?

“Why can’t a smart woman love fashion?”Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Welcome to a unique academic blog on fashion…or vice versa!

My name is Amanda Renée and I have a passion for two things that are typically thought to be mutually exclusive – academic scholarship and fashion. As a Doctoral student, I’ve heard just about every excuse why female academics shouldn’t care about fashion.

But why not?

This blog provides a fresh, new perspective on this idea by demonstrating how female academics and professionals can – and indeed should – indulge their “feminine side.” As a new mom, academic, and fashion-lover, I have created this blog to speak to those three distinct aspects of my life through the creation of three main categories – la mode (style), maman (mommy), and académique (academia). I have also included the section ensembles to highlight looks I’m currently wearing. Feel free to browse the site based on these three categories or just read whichever post strikes your fancy!

Be on the lookout for useful comments and tips on makeup, fashion, mommy time management, and surviving academia!

I think cussing is a sign of intelligence and I’ve read studies supporting a correlation between the two. It’s your blog so use whatever words you want. I love your writing, Amanda (and I would have been scared shitless about giving birth, too lol)!

Lol thanks, Mary! I’ve gotten so used to swearing that sometimes I have to remember that not everyone thinks it’s appropriate – especially on a public blog! Yeah, labor was scary intense but I can honestly say now that there’s nothing like bringing a little person into the world 🙂

I think cussing is a sign of high intelligence (and I’ve read studies that have found a correlation between the two), and it’s your blog so you can use whatever words you want. I love your writing, Amanda!

Thanks for the compliment, Mary! I’ve been in academia so long that I was really worried that my writing style wouldbe mumbo jumbo but it’s SO fun getting to write about the three things that define who I am day-in and day-out – style, academia and mommyhood 😀

I really like your blog. It is well written and engaging. I didn’t read the makeup applying portion, but the rest of it was great. If you want to appeal to a broader group (if that interests you), you may want to change the swearing to a good alternative word (eg – shit VS crap). I like how you write, but some people may read it and stop right there. I am looking forward to what you have to say in future blogs.

That’s an awesome point; sometimes I forget that not everyone thinks swearing is an appropriate way to express yourself. Thanks for commenting and the compliment! It’s pretty fun to finally be writing about fashion! 🙂
